With NFL training camps underway, the league is abuzz with position battles, injury news and rookies making an immediate impact. Each day, TSN.ca provides the latest rumours, reports and speculation from around the NFL beat. Given His Shot After a strong showing in the teams scrimmage on Saturday, Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel opened practice with the Browns first-team offence on Monday. Manziel electrified the crowd in Akron, Ohio on Saturday while reportedly outperforming incumbent Brian Hoyer. On his first play on Monday, Manziel connected with Travis Benjamin on a 40-yard pass, which Benjamin retreated to catch due to being underthrown. Manziels next pass was tipped and intercepted by safety Donte Whitner. This is the first known involvement for Manziel with the first-team offence in training camp. Out of the Woods? Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel called the decision to give second-year receiver Robert Woods no snaps with the first team offence in Sundays Hall of Fame game, "a bit surprising." Woods is coming off a productive rookie season where he caught 40 passes for 587 yards and three touchdowns. He caught four balls for 49 yards and a touchdown working with quarterbacks Jeff Tuel and Thad Lewis on Sunday night. "A little bit (surprised) for Woody not to be in with us with the ones. A bit surprising," Manuel said told ESPN.com. "But he did great. He did great. Woodys going to be Woody with whatever hes given. So I was still glad to see him go out there and do a great job." The first-team offence featured Mike Williams and rookie first-round pick Sammy Watkins on the outside with Chris Hogan taking snaps in the slot position. Woods said after the game he was given no reason for being left off the field from the first-team offence, but that would produce with whoever played with. "It is what it is," the 2013 second-round pick said. "I just come out here and make plays whenever Im in on the field." Wounded Eagle Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper suffered a foot injury over the weekend and is in a walking boot. Cooper is expected to return to practice later this week and though his status for the Eagles first preseason game is in jeopardy, Cooper should be fully healthy for the regular season. The 26-year-old (who will be 27 in September) signed a five-year contract extension following his strong 2013 season. Cooper caught 47 passes for 835 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Cooper faces competition for his starting position from rookie Jordan Matthews in the spot opposite Jeremy Maclin. Struggling Shaq The New York Daily News reports Jets fourth-round pick receiver Shaq Evans has struggled with drops throughout training camp. Evans, one of two wide receivers drafted in the fourth-round this year by the Jets, is not listed amongst the top-six receivers on the Jets current depth chart. Evans struggles continue a disappointing trend for the Jets, as second-round selection tight end Jace Amaro is reportedly also struggling in camp. Due to their draft position, however, both players should make the teams 53-man roster for the regular season. The Daily News described the entire Jets draft class as looking "green." Archie Manning Saints Jersey . - The Kansas City Royals are hoping All-Star catcher Salvador Perez will be back in a few days. Erik McCoy Youth Jersey .ca. Mr. Fraser, I think everyone would like to hear your opinion on what sort of suspension Zac Rinaldo should get. His comment after the game of I changed the whole game, man. http://www.authenticsaintssportsonline.com/saints-marshon-lattimore-gold-jersey/ . -- Canadas Justin Shin shot an 8-under 64 on Thursday on PGA Wests Nicklaus Tournament Course to take the first-round lead in the Web. Cameron Jordan Jersey .3 seconds remaining, and No. 7 North Carolina held off a resilient No. 25 Virginia team, 54-51, on Saturday. John Henson contributed a double-double with 15 points to go with 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels (25-4, 12-2 ACC), who have won five straight and 10 of 11. Ted Ginn Jr Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla.KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- James Shields would have been wise to pop some Dramamine, Ned Yost some antacids. The Royals ace survived six shaky innings mostly of his own doing Sunday, and the Kansas City offence supplied just enough offence against Hiroki Kuroda to squeak out a 2-1 victory. "Shields had to grind it out again and again," said Yost, his manager, who spent the entire game on edge, "and he made it through some choppy waters." Even without any motion-sickness medicine. The Royals have won the last seven games that Shields (7-3) has started, and hes earned the win in four of those. The veteran right-hander may have lasted only six innings in this effort, but he gave up only six hits to the punchless Yankees and allowed one unearned run. "Theyre always tough," said Shields, who faced the Yankees for the 30th time, more than any other club. "They make good at-bats. Its always a grind whenever you face them." Aaron Crow escaped a jam in the seventh inning, and Wade Davis recorded the 500th strikeout of his career during a perfect eighth before Greg Holland survived a shaky ninth for his 18th save. The All-Star closer gave up a leadoff single to Ichiro Suzuki and then sent him to second on a wild pitch. Holland kept his cool, retiring Brian Roberts on a fly out, pinch hitter Mark Teixeira on a groundout and then striking out Brett Gardner to end the game. "Shields battled his butt off," Crow said. "You want to make sure he gets the win." The Yankees failed to score more than four runs for the 10th consecutive game, though the not-so-aptly-named "Bronx Bombers" certainly had their share of chances. Not just in the ninth inning, either. New York stranded runners on first and second in the first inning. It loaded the bases with nobody out in the second and failed to score. Jacoby Ellsbury led off the third with a double and was left on third base. And Roberts was stranded after a fourth-inning double. "Somehow weve got to find a way to get it done," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. In all, 10 of the first 12 outs Shields recorded were with runners in scoring position.dddddddddddd The Yankees finished 1 for 17 with runners in scoring position. "It was a game of missed opportunities," Derek Jeter said. "We had a lot of opportunities. Gives those guys credit. Weve seen Shields for years now and hes as good as they come, especially with guys on base. He bears down." While the Yankees were struggling to find a clutch hit, the Royals managed to string together the only real success they had against Kuroda (4-4) with two outs in the second inning. Hot-hitting Salvador Perez, who cracked a three-run homer in an 8-4 win Saturday night, got things going with a single. Cains base hit drove in the first run and Moustakas, in the throes of another major slump, added another single to make the score 2-0. That was all the Royals could muster against Kuroda, who had been unbeaten in his last six starts. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three in seven innings. New York finally scored in the sixth, when Yangervis Solarte hit a double and reached third base on a passed ball. Suzuki drove him in with a groundout to shortstop. But given a chance to tie the game, the Yankees kept coming up empty. Their failure in the ninth inning came after Gardner sent a triple to the wall with one out in the seventh. Crow rebounded to get Jeter on a ground out, and then struck out Ellsbury with a full-count pitch to leave the tying run 90 feet away. "When guys are scuffling it seems like they are scuffling in bunches. When you get hot it seems like a lot of guys are hot," Jeter said. "These are the times youve got to keep swinging. The only way to get out of it is swing out of it." NOTES: Davis has not allowed a hit in 15 appearances. ... The double by Roberts was actually a ground-rule double. A ball boy picked up his fair ball down the right-field line and gave it to a fan. ... Royals 2B Omar Infante ended a 0-for-19 slump with a single in the third. ... LHP Vidal Nuno starts the series finale Monday for New York. LHP Jason Vargas starts for Kansas City. ' ' '
